NHS leaders will face both the ‘carrot and the stick’ in new performance drive

Friday 16th May 2025

The Government is taking further practical steps to encourage productivity and efficiency across NHS healthcare trusts with this new ‘carrot and stick’ approach announced yesterday by the Department of Health and Social Care prioritising efforts to reduce the long waits patients face for elective care across the UK.

- CEO's cutting waiting times and delivering improvements for patients could be rewarded with bonuses of up to 10%
- But failing trust execs face will have annual pay rises docked under tough new government measures

The  independent sector has and continues to play a vital role in supporting hospitals, trusts and systems to tackle the growing elective care backlog, already providing treatment for millions of NHS patients a year and ready to support further following this year's partnership agreement.

The IDrF looks forward to working with the rest of the independent sector and NHS trust leaders to explore how our members can best continue to help cut waiting lists and drive better patient care across the UK!

We will be exploring how we can make the most of this collaborative approach to care between the NHS and independent sector and what practical steps can be taken in our first annual conference on 10 July 2025.
