Appraisal & Revalidation

Appraisal is a key element in ensuring that doctors continue to provide exceptional care and remain at the forefront of their practice. At the Independent Doctors Federation, we understand that the appraisal process can feel like a daunting task, which is why we are dedicated to making it as seamless and supportive as possible. We are proud to offer a dedicated, streamlined appraisal experience, exclusively for our members, tailored to the needs of independent practitioners.

Our Appraisal Service

The Independent Doctors Federation (IDrF) offers a dedicated appraisal service designed specifically for doctors working in the independent sector. The process is supportive, efficient and comprehensive using the L2P appraisal platform. Appraisals are conducted by a national team of experienced appraisers from a wide range of specialties, all of whom have undergone independent sector-specific training. Detailed information about the process can be found in the Medical Appraisal and Revalidation Policy (add link)

  • Appraisal Process: All members connected to IDrF as their Designated Body (DB) must undergo appraisals through the IDrF system. If you'd like to use the IDrF appraisal service independently and cannot connect to us as your DB, please contact the Revalidation Team for more details. Appraisers are assigned randomly, and you’ll be notified of your appraiser's details. If both parties agree, you can meet for three consecutive appraisals before being paired with a new appraiser.
  • Fees: Members will be invoiced for the appraisal service on 1st April each year. The fee covers the DB fee, L2P licence, and appraiser costs. Stand-alone appraisal service fees are also listed in the Fee Schedule.

For any questions or additional information, contact the IDrF Revalidation Team.

Revalidation is an essential process for ensuring that licensed doctors in the UK remain fit to practice, up-to-date, and continue to provide high-quality care. With our strong relationship with the GMC and a dedicated Responsible Officer and revalidation team, we offer our connected members a wealth of professional guidance and advice to navigate every step of revalidation, ensuring they continue to thrive in their careers and maintain the highest standards of patient care.

Our Revalidation Service

You can easily connect with the IDrF as your Designated Body through a straightforward application process.

To become a connected member of the IDrF, you must meet the following criteria:

Hold a GMC licence to practise and, if you are subject to any current GMC sanctions, warnings, or pending Fitness to Practise investigations, declare these in your application form.

Undertake all or part of your work, which requires you to hold a Licence to Practise, in the Independent Medical Sector.

Have used the GMC Find My Connection tool to confirm that the IDrF is the appropriate Designated Body for your revalidation connection.

We recommend that before submitting your application you review the criteria above, as there is a non-refundable application fee of £115.

For connected members an additional fee is charged annually on the 1st of April which covers costs for appraisal and revalidation. If you have recently connected to the IDrF from a different Designated Body, you will be issued backdated fees for the years within your current revalidation cycle.

The details of the fee structure can be found here

We look forward to welcoming you to our community and will be here to guide and support you every step of the way.
