We are delighted to welcome you to our evening webinar with Mr Simon Gale from Howden Insurance Brokers, who will be presenting on When your care is challenged: understanding clinical negligence claims.

Howden Insurance Brokers presents a practical webinar on what happens when a clinician’s care is challenged. Drawing on real claims experience across general practice, psychiatry and surgery, the session sets out what the duty of care actually requires, what has to be established before clinical negligence is proven, and why so many claims turn not on the clinical decision itself but on whether that decision can be evidenced after the event.

The webinar examines the clinical record as the primary defence document, including the growing use of ambient voice technologies (AVTs) and AI-assisted note-taking — where they strengthen a record, and the new risks they introduce. It also covers the practical steps to take when a complaint arrives: who to tell, when to notify your insurer or indemnity provider, and the consequences of leaving it too late.

The session closes by explaining how complaints, notifications and claims affect insurance — from how cover responds and what must be disclosed, through to renewal terms, premium and the longer-term implications of a claims history.

Learning objectives –

By the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the duty of care owed to patients and explain what must be established before a claim in clinical negligence can succeed.
  • Recognise how claims arise in practice through worked examples drawn from general practice, psychiatry and surgery.
  • Assess their own record-keeping against what is needed to defend a claim, including the appropriate use of ambient voice technologies (AVTs) and AI-assisted documentation.
  • Identify the right course of action when a complaint is received, including who to involve and when a matter should be notified to an insurer or indemnity provider.
  • Explain how complaints, notifications and claims affect insurance cover, disclosure obligations and renewal terms.
